Each year, thousands converge in Black Rock City (eastern US), a temporary metropolis in the heart of Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, for a week of experimental art, self-expression, creativity and community.

Know Your Burning Man

Back to Hippies years ! Since its humble beginnings, the festival has grown from a small bonfire ritual on the beaches of San Francisco to a teeming desert throng of more than 50,000 people. With the psychedelic art, temperatures exceeding 40°C, plenty of dust and symbolic burning of the Burning Man effigy, this is not for faint of heart. But if we’re nostalgic for our past medical Crit or Hippocup, and still, we are interested in taking part in an « annual experiment in temporary community dedicated to radical self-expression and radical self-reliance », this might be the festival for us !

The festival changes each year based on a theme determined by founder LARRY HARVEY. Fest-goers build everything from art installations to theme camps to art cars – and some even come in costume.

The event takes place in late summer / early fall on the PLAYA, an ancient lake bed located in a 1000-square-kilometer expanse.

Beginning in 1993, volunteers started to place small kerosene lanterns on lampposts each night, illuminating the pathway toward The MAN.

First and last : LEAVE NO TRACE. Even when attendees take everything with them, it takes a month to return the desert to its natural state.

It takes more than 2,000 VOLUNTEERS to build, run and clean up the city during the event, with many of them working year round.

You can’t buy or sell anything at Burning Man. Black Rock City is a place of sharing and FREE EXCHANGE, or gifting. There is one café that sells espressos ans a few other beverages. A permit is needed to gift food to the public.

This is a REAL LEGEND. This a place apart from the world in the middle of nowhere, where all begins and all ends.
